A wooden sculpture from Ghana titled A wooden sculpture, depicting Prampram (Dangme) figures in a formal pair, height 56 cm and weight 2.8 kg, sold with stand, in fair condition with provenance listed as Southern Ghana.
Description from the seller
Prampram Figure Pair - Southern Ghana
The two slender wooden figures form a formally closely related pair. Slender necks and disproportionately large, egg-shaped heads rise above long, almost columnar bodies. The facial features are reduced to the point of abstraction; small drill holes mark the eyes and other anatomical points. Slender arms follow the sides, while the legs emerge directly from the torso. One figure wears a fragmentary piece of textile around its hips. The dry, earthy brown surface retains traces of reddish pigmentation, abrasion, and numerous small indentations. It is precisely this reduction that lends the pair a quiet, archaic presence.
The so-called Prampram sculptures belong to a rarely documented pictorial tradition in southeastern Ghana, within the cultural context of the Dangme people. Comparable pieces show the same elongated bodies, tapered limbs, and oval heads. Jaenicke Njoya's field information connects individual Prampram figures with shrine contexts. For pieces from Lectsoboi, there is also a local tradition that they embodied historical war heroes. However, this statement is tied to a specific context of origin and cannot be generalized to all Prampram sculptures. Even in the case of the present pair, the original ritual or memorial function therefore remains unclear.
