Description from the seller
Important fan-shaped monstrance with a caryatid angel – silvered and gilt metal – 19th century
Important and scenographic Eucharistic monstrance in a radiating, fan-like arrangement, made during the 19th century, characterized by a refined alternation of silvered and gilt surfaces and by a rich iconographic apparatus of strong decorative impact.
The work presents a wide, shaped and deeply worked base, organized in radial acanthus scrolls and embossed ornamental motifs, enriched by gilded interventions that create an elegant contrast with the silver background. The base configuration, broad and highly plastic, gives the whole ensemble notable presence and stability.
The shaft takes on a particularly evocative form: the protagonist is a full-length angel, modeled in the round, with large wings meticulously defined in the plumage and gilded. The figure, with both arms raised, symbolically supports the upper Eucharistic reliquary, in accordance with an iconographic solution well documented in the production of sacred furniture of the 19th century.
Above the angel there is also a winged cherub head, also enriched by gilding, an element that further accentuates the object’s verticality and symbolic richness.
The upper part is dominated by the large sunburst composed of a dense succession of lanceolate and flame-like rays, alternately silvered and gilt. At the center is placed the circular, openable reliquary, still provided with its crystal, surrounded by a gilded molded frame.
The composition culminates in a gilded apex cross, set on a small globular element, completing the traditional Eucharistic symbolism of the monstrance.
The object retains a particularly authentic charm, with patina, light oxidations and traces of use consistent with its age, visible in the photographs and to be regarded as an integral part of its history. The surfaces also show the workmanship and the differentiation between elements obtained by casting and parts worked in sheet metal.
No clearly legible touch marks or title marks were identified; for this reason, although it presents characteristics compatible with pieces made also in silver, the object is prudently and correctly offered as silvered and gilt metal, without attribution to precious metal.
The considerable weight of about 1.3 kg, together with its size and the complexity of the work, make it an object of notable presence, suitable both for a sacred art and liturgical collection and as an important decorative element in a classic, eclectic, or contemporary research environment.
Era: 19th century.
Material: silvered and gilt metal, faceted glass/crystal
Height: 44.5 cm
Maximum width: about 22 cm
Depth: about 16.5 cm
Weight: about 1.3 kg
The photographs are an integral part of the description and accurately document the state of conservation, patina, and the details of the work.
The monstrance will be packaged with particular care and professional protection, appropriate to the delicacy of the sunburst, wings, and protruding elements.
