Description from the seller
Superb and large antique bronze double desk inkstand, of French manufacture and origin, dating from the second half of the 19th century (Napoleon III / Neo-Renaissance style). This prestige piece, heavy and of substantial size, is ideal for decorating a desk or a collector's library.
• The large central pediment is adorned with a superb mascaron in the form of a lion’s head or a fantastical creature (chimera/fauna) with expressive features, topped by a sculpted pine cone at the apex. A classic symbol of immortality, wisdom and the elevation of the spirit.
• The two large handles on the tray are richly decorated and formed by magnificent anthropomorphic faces representing Silenus or a sylvan Faun, deities of wild nature whose head and beard features merge entirely into chiselled acanthus leaves.
• In Greek and Roman mythology, these are the deities of forests and nature, often depicted with the face fused with vegetation (grape leaves, ivy or acanthus).
Dimensions: 33 cm × 14.5 cm × 12.5 cm
