Description from the seller

Rega Planet audiophile top-loading compact disc player in the iconic black finish, hand-built in Southend-on-Sea, Essex (United Kingdom) by Rega Research (circa 1997–2000). Technically in 100% good working order (smooth CD recognition, fluid manually operated loading lid, and flawless playback); visually in neat condition with light signs of use commensurate with age.

The original Rega Planet is an absolute milestone in British audio history and marked Rega's very first step into the digital audio world. The player instantly earned legendary status thanks to its radical, uncompromising design: no fiddly sliding motorized drawer, but a manually opening top-loader with a futuristic cast aluminium loading lid in which a dedicated magnetic puck (clamping puck) is integrated. The entire unit is housed in Rega's heavy, cast aluminium 'clamshell' chassis, which acts as a massive heatsink and also provides unparalleled mechanical rigidity and shielding against resonances and electromagnetic interference.

Sonically, the Planet became world-famous for sounding as you would expect from a legendary turntable builder: exceptionally analog, fluid and warm, with a complete absence of the typical early digital harshness and listening fatigue. Internally, the Planet uses a high-quality 20-bit Burr-Brown DAC (PCM1710U) paired with a discrete Class-A analog output stage and a robust Sony transport mechanism. In addition to the analog stereo RCA outputs, the player features both a coaxial and an optical Toslink digital output, making the device also excellent as pure high-end CD playback duty.
