Pierre d'Avesn, whose real name was Pierre Girre, was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on 23 October 1901 and died in Paris in 1990.

Pierre d'Avesn was a pupil of François Decorchemont at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. He was taken on by Lalique, where he stayed for ten years. He worked between 1930 and 1936 at Daum, where he developed the production of pressed blown glass in the production department Lorrain Nancy.

In 1937 he joined the Verlys company in the Holophane glass division of the Andelys glass factory. After 1945 he worked at the Cristallerie de Choisy le Roi, where he reissued old models and created new ones. He remained there until his retirement in 1984. Regarded as the elite of the last glassmakers of the Art Deco period, he died in Paris at the age of 90.
