AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Italy – Risorgimento – National Guard
Portrait of an officer, probably captain of the National Guard of the Kingdom of Italy, in full dress, circa 1861-1866.
Old photographic print on paper, mounted on cardboard, hand-coloured, notably in red on the facings, epaulettes and stripe of the trousers.
Print format: 16.5 × 13.5 cm.

The officer is depicted seated, in a dark uniform with a double row of buttons, red collar and facings, fringed epaulettes, white belt and gray trousers with a scarlet stripe. His regulation kepi, placed on the table, bears the insignia of the National Guard. Sabre at the side.
The uniform very likely corresponds to the full dress regulation adopted in 1861, at the dawn of the Kingdom of Italy, in the context of Italian unification. By comparison with contemporary models and portraits preserved, the rank of captain appears most probable.

Interesting photographic military testimony of the Risorgimento, made more appealing by the period polychrome retouches. Some wear and alterations to the support, not affecting the legibility of the portrait.
