Description from the seller

Important mantel clock
Napoleon III era
Black marble, patinated régule and gilt bronze
Croix Escabasse in Libourne
19th century

Elegant and imposing French mantel clock from the Napoleon III period, dating from the second half of the 19th century, presenting a rich composition combining black marble, patinated régule with bronze patina and gilt bronze ornaments.
The clock rests on a substantial architectural base in black marble.

The sculptural part depicts a gentleman seated in Renaissance-inspired attire, in a meditative posture.
He holds in his hand a scroll or document, while his costume, boots, sleeves and the various elements of the seat are treated with great detail. The figure is made in régule with bronze patina, with fine relief effects and an aged patina preserved.

To the left of the figure lies the clock movement, integrated into a richly worked case. It is surmounted by a remarkable gilt-bronze decoration composed of branches and laurel leaves, arranged around a motif evoking a scroll or a sheaf.

The ancient key is present and naturally takes its place in this décor.
The circular enamel dial is particularly elegant. It has black Roman numerals, a peripheral minute track and fine old hands. It has two winding openings ringed with metal.
The dial bears the inscriptions:
“CROIX ESCABASSE”
“A LIBOURNE”
The mechanical movement is accompanied by its engraved balance wheel numbered 2670, its striking bell and its winding key, all visible in the photographs.

The clock presents a very handsome presence and a substantial size:
Dimensions: 42 cm in length × 32 cm in height × 13 cm in depth.
Weight: about 11.45 kg.

The object shows the normal traces of its antiquity and use: patina, occasional wear to the gilding and the patina, as well as some marks, scratches and small chips on the marble visible in the photographs

The mechanism needs servicing.
It does not work.
