AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Erica Ceramics and Earthenware Factory • Moss-green Art Deco tree-bark relief • marked 'ERICA 2085' • Netherlands • ca. 1932–1940

A moss-green earthenware Art Deco cachepot from Erica, in the tree-bark model that the factory sold many of. Vertical bark-like plates with deep grooves bear a glossy glaze with red-brown speckles. The bottom is closed, without a drainage hole: a cachepot, a plant pot in its own pot.

In one glance:

Material: earthenware with green glaze, glazed all around

Dimensions: height 9.5 cm × diameter 11.5 cm

Weight: 395 grams

Trademark: impressed ERICA in a curved line on the bottom, with 2085, 1/2 and a small twig

Dating: ca. 1932–1940 (indication from the signing style)

Provenance: private collection, Western Europe

Description and context:

Conical shape with a slightly thickened, rounded rim. The wall bears irregular bark plates with deep grooves, transitioning at the bottom to horizontal ribs. The glaze covers the entire surface, including under the bottom, and the grooves are darker.

The Erica Ceramics and Earthenware Factory was founded in 1932 in Hoogezand by brothers Geert and Jelte Nijborg and Fritz Rehfeld. They occupied the building of a canned-factory. In 1935 a new factory was built, designed by Paulus Marinus Happel from Gouda. After a fire in 1941 there was reconstruction; decorative ceramics were prohibited from October 1942 and returned after liberation. The tree-bark model in green and brown was popular. Erica closed in 1976 due to competition from plastic pots. The Historisch Archief Midden-Groningen displayed earthenware there in 2023.

Condition:

Good. Glaze: intact and glossy, no cracks observed. Edge and base: no chips observed. Wall: one small round hole in the glaze near the rim, see the images. Bottom: small glaze globs, production-specific. Watertightness not tested. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food.

In the interior:

Fits in an Art Deco, mid-century, or eclectic interior, as a cachepot on a windowsill or low table. The moss green harmonizes with earthy tones today; the relief catches grazing light.

Shipping:

Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Always shipped insured with Track and Trace. See feedback from previous buyers.
