AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Avery – seven British brass weights with historic calibration marks

A piece of British commercial history with a beautifully lived-in appearance. These seven brass weights from Avery / W & T Avery Ltd form an attractive series, from the large pound weight to the small quarter-ounce weight. The warm metal tones, engraved inscriptions and numerous control stamps give each specimen its own character.

The round, flat weights have a raised edge and can be stacked compactly on top of one another. Side by side they display their ascending sizes and the different manufacturer marks nicely: ‘AVERY’, ‘AVERY LTD’ and ‘W & T AVERY LTD’.

Avery is among the historic British names in weighing equipment. From around 1818 the company carried the name W & T Avery and was closely associated with Birmingham. Weights like these were used with balance scales to weigh goods for trade.

Historical calibration marks

The underside bears British verification stamps, including a crown above G R, the royal initials for George Rex. In combination with the visible inspection marks from the twenties and thirties, this corresponds to use during the reign of George V.

On one of the weights, markings such as 28, 30, 31 and 32 are visible: indications that fit with successive inspections in 1928–1932. These stamps document the usage history; they do not automatically indicate the year of manufacture. On one of the larger weights there is also a lead setting plug with a calibration mark visible.

An attractive set for collectors of historical weights, old shop inventory and British industrial objects. Decoratively, the weights also look splendid on a desk, on a workbench, or beside an old balance.
