Description from the seller

Large Sulfur on Alveolar Aragonite - Cozzo Disi Sicily - 5.34 Kg

An impressive large specimen from the historic Cozzo Disi Mine, Casteltermini, Agrigento, Sicily, Italy, combining native sulfur with an unusual and highly sculptural formation of alveolar aragonite.

The aragonite develops a complex honeycomb-like structure, with cavities and irregular surfaces partially covered by the characteristic bright yellow sulfur of Cozzo Disi. Its size, three-dimensional architecture and strong contrast between the white aragonite and yellow sulfur make this a particularly striking display specimen.

The piece becomes even more interesting under 365 nm UV light: the aragonite produces an intense pink fluorescence. When the UV source is switched off, a green phosphorescent afterglow remains briefly visible, providing a completely different appearance in darkness.

Minor natural traces of bitumen may be present in the matrix, reflecting the specimen’s original geological environment.
The specimen has been carefully cleaned under laboratory conditions to expose and preserve the natural crystal surfaces. Bituminous material originally coating some of the crystals was selectively removed, while minor natural traces may remain within the matrix as part of the specimen’s original geological association.

A substantial specimen weighing over 5 kg, originating from a long-established Sicilian mineral collection.

Locality: Cozzo Disi Mine, Casteltermini, Agrigento, Sicily, Italy
