Description from the seller
English Georgian secretary desk – ca. 1830
A particularly charming English Georgian secretary, presumably dating from circa 1820–1835. A stylish and characterful piece of furniture that beautifully represents the restrained elegance and excellent furniture tradition of 19th-century England.
The secretary is executed in attractive, warm oak and features a balanced, classic cabinet layout with four generous drawers and a slant-down writing surface. Behind the writing surface there is a practical writing and storage area. The whole is completed by beautiful dark fittings, in keeping with the stately appearance of the piece.
A particularly attractive detail is the green leather writing surface, richly finished with real gold leaf. The refined gold decoration gives the interior of the secretary a noble and luxurious look and forms a beautiful contrast with the warm oak.
The sober, elegant lines are characteristic of the Georgian style: functional, refined, and without extravagant ornamentation. It is precisely this restrained design that makes the desk timeless and highly adaptable to both a classic and a contemporary interior.
A very atmospheric antique English secretary with a beautiful patina, fine proportions, and a distinctive character. A decorative and functional piece of furniture that makes a striking focal point in any study, library, or living room.
Period: ca. 1820–1835
Origin: England
Style: Georgian
Material: oak and green leather
Special features: drop-front writing surface, green leather writing surface with real gold leaf, four drawers. All locks function as they should, except for the lock of the small interior cabinet; this lock does not work.
Note: this is a very heavy and solid piece of furniture. Because of its weight, the secretary can only be picked up.
