Description from the seller
Marine Reptile Fossil Egg – Upper Jurassic – Madagascar
A rare fossil egg from the Upper Jurassic deposits of the Morondava Basin, Menabe Region, Madagascar, dating to approximately 150 million years ago. During the Late Jurassic, this region was characterized by coastal lagoons and shallow marine environments that provided ideal nesting grounds for a variety of marine reptiles.
The specimen retains its original three-dimensional shape and exhibits an exceptional level of natural preservation.
The fossil displays a naturally weathered surface with subtle mineral coloration acquired during millions of years of fossilization. Its complete morphology and untouched appearance make it an authentic example of Jurassic reptile reproduction, preserved almost exactly as it was found.
Marine reptile eggs are considerably rarer than dinosaur eggs, offering valuable insight into the reproductive biology and nesting behavior of these ancient vertebrates that inhabited the seas during the age of dinosaurs. Specimens preserving remnants of the original shell are especially prized by collectors, museums, and researchers.
Locality: Morondava Basin, Menabe Region, Madagascar
Geological Age: Upper Jurassic, approximately 150 million years old
Preservation: Complete three-dimensional fossil egg with partially preserved original eggshell
A rare and highly collectible Jurassic fossil, combining excellent natural preservation with important paleontological significance.
