Pair of female terms carved in oak wood, dating to the 17th century with probable Flemish origin and Late Renaissance/Early Baroque style; each piece measures 40 cm high, 10 cm wide and 7 cm deep, sold together as a pair, with a dark brown patina and signs of wear, age-related marks, insect holes and small losses at the lower ends.
Description from the seller
Pair of female carved wooden terms – Flanders, 17th century
Beautiful pair of female carved wooden terms in strong relief, probably of Flemish origin and dating from the first half of the 17th century.
The two figures are depicted with exposed torsos, adorned with a pendant necklace. A draped cloth at the waist extends into an abundant composition of deeply sculpted foliage. The uplifted faces, the hair treated in broad locks, and the vigor of the sculpture belong to the decorative vocabulary of late Renaissance and early Baroque of the Low Countries.
The reverse sides are completely flat, showing that these were originally wall appliqués, likely integrated into a piece of furniture, woodwork, or architectural decoration. This type of female term is well documented in 17th-century Flemish furniture.
Nice old dark brown patina with wear revealing the natural wood tone in places. Later suspension rings.
Condition: antique state with wear, holes from old wood-boring insects, small losses and accidents, mainly at the lower extremities. The whole nevertheless retains a very handsome presence and an especially interesting antique patina. Please study the photographs, which are part of the description.
Dimensions of each piece: H. 40 cm × W. 10 cm × D. 7 cm.
Sold together as a pair.
The photos are an integral part of the object descriptions and complement the presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
