Description from the seller
Devonian Goniatite – Polished Fossil with Natural Suture Patterns – Morocco
An impressive Goniatite from the Devonian deposits of Morocco, dating back approximately 360–420 million years. This beautifully polished fossil displays a distinctive coiled shell, rich natural coloration, and fascinating patterns preserved over hundreds of millions of years.
The specimen features a striking combination of deep chocolate brown, black, warm beige, and earthy bronze tones. Its polished surface reveals intricate mineralized formations and delicate, irregular suture patterns, creating an attractive contrast between darker areas and lighter fossil structures.
Particularly remarkable is its sculptural shape, with a broad, rounded outer whorl extending toward a gracefully pointed termination. The natural spiral structure remains recognizable, while subtle variations in texture and mineralization give the specimen a unique appearance.
Both sides display different arrangements of fossilized patterns, natural fractures, and contrasting mineralized areas, revealing the complex geological history of this ancient marine cephalopod.
Goniatites were early ammonoid cephalopods that inhabited prehistoric oceans long before the appearance of dinosaurs. Their distinctive shell structures and characteristic suture patterns make them particularly interesting to collectors and enthusiasts of paleontology.
The specimen is supplied with the clear acrylic display stand shown in the photographs.
A beautiful example of prehistoric marine life, combining remarkable geological antiquity with elegant natural aesthetics, ideal for fossil collections, natural history displays, or a refined cabinet of curiosities.
