Western Asiatic electrum Granular Bead, pierced longitudinally for suspension, with a short bicone body and granulated bands at each end; measurements about L 0.6 cm, diameter 0.5 cm, weight 0.65 g; in good condition and authentic as original/official.
Description from the seller
A Western Asiatic electrum bead, pierced longitudinally for suspension. The bead features a short, bicone body, with slanting sides that meet at an encircling, raised ridge. The bead is further adorned with a granulated band on each end, encompassing the openings. Earthly encrustations, tarnishing, and signs of wear as consistent with age, including minor chipping, pitting, warping, and scratches, to the surface.
Many grand civilisations inhabited the area of the Near East and Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity is witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold and electrum beads would have been a part of elaborate larger pieces, such as on necklaces or bracelets in the area of Western Asia. Beautiful precious and semi-precious stones would have been added in the larger pieces to signify wealth and social status. These styles were at the centre of Near Eastern and Western Asiatic jewellery production and were later adopted by the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans. Gold necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets would have been worn in everyday life but also buried with the deceased.
Measurements (approx.): L 0.6cm, Diameter 0.5cm
Weight 0.65g
Provenance: Ex Japanese private collection, deceased, 1970-2010.
