The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121 – AD 180) ruled together with co-emperor Lucius Verus from the year 161 until 180 AD. Known as one of the so-called “Five Good Emperors,” his reign marked the end of the period of greatest splendor and political stability of the Roman Empire. He is also remembered as “the philosopher emperor,” one of the most notable representatives of Stoic philosophy. His best-known work is the “Meditations,” a diary in which he reflects his thoughts following the tenets of Stoicism, such as the pursuit of virtue and wisdom and their application in daily life.
