Description from the seller
Chinese pendant in nephrite jade and russet with Chilong dragons, back featuring Ruyi scepter heads) – Ming Dynasty, 17th Century
Last 2 pages: provenance: Oriental Art Auction House – lot 130
Important and refined pendant in ancient nephrite jade, finely hand-carved and dating to the late Ming Dynasty period (17th century).
Front: Relief-decorated with sinuously coiling archaic Chilong dragons that run along the surface. The carver masterfully exploited the stone’s natural iron oxide inclusions (russet color, rust/brown) to give volume and color contrast to the creatures’ anatomy (Qiǎodiāo technique).
Back: Features a refined symmetrical raised geometrical decoration with four archaizing volute motifs (cloud scrolls / Ruyi scepter heads), arranged around the central hole to symbolize the cardinal points and good fortune.
Condition: Excellent overall, consistent with the period and use. No restorations. Displays a magnificent natural waxy patina (mutton-fat) and microscopic signs of ancient manual work (U-shaped grooves) visible in the inner details of the carving.
