Description from the seller
Rare Large Antique Porcelain Half Doll – Bonnet Lady – 16cm – Numbered – c.1920s
Full description
A particularly striking and unusually large antique porcelain half doll, dating approximately to the 1920s, depicting an elegant lady wearing an impressive oversized bonnet.
At approximately 16 cm high, this is a very substantial example of a half doll. Most surviving porcelain half dolls are considerably smaller, making examples of this scale particularly desirable and impressive when displayed.
The lady is beautifully modelled with a large yellow bonnet, softly curled blonde hair and delicately hand-painted facial features. She wears a pale green shawl with moulded fringe over a lilac/purple bodice with wide white sleeves, finished with a pretty pink bow beneath her chin.
Her separately modelled arms and hands are particularly attractive. One hand rests across her chest while the other crosses below, creating a graceful three-dimensional pose rather than the simpler moulded form seen on many smaller half dolls.
The lower porcelain base has the original sewing holes, showing that the figure was intended to be attached to a fabric skirt, pincushion or similar decorative textile piece.
Importantly, the doll also retains an impressed serial/model number on the lower back, visible in the photographs.
Measurements:
Height: approximately 16 cm
Width: approximately 10 cm
Depth: approximately 6 cm
Condition:
The doll is in excellent antique condition. No obvious chips, cracks or repairs are visible. The porcelain remains bright and attractive and the hand-painted pastel colours are very well preserved. There is some minor age-related wear and variation to the painted decoration, particularly around the bonnet, entirely consistent with a piece of this age.
Please examine all photographs carefully, including the photographs of the underside and impressed number, as they form an important part of the condition description.
Dating approximately to the 1920s, this is a rare large-format example and considerably more substantial than the majority of antique porcelain half dolls encountered today.
An excellent collector’s piece for a collection of antique half dolls, German/European porcelain, pincushion dolls or early 20th-century decorative porcelain.
Circa: 1920s
Material: Glazed porcelain
Height: 16 cm
Width: 10 cm
Depth: 6 cm
Markings: Impressed serial/model number
Condition: Excellent antique condition
