Amlash greyware spouted vessel with an outsplayed rim, measuring 6.8 cm high by 11.5 cm wide, in good condition and dating to the circa 1st millennium BC.
Description from the seller
A fine Amlash greyware spouted vessel with an outsplayed rim. The squat rounded body, pinched in at the neck, rests on a flattened but uneven base. The neck is short and leads to a wide mouth with an outsplayed, flattened rim. A short, curved spout extends from the middle of the body. Chipping and damage to the rim of the vessel, and a small chip to the shoulder.
The term ‘Amlash Culture’, has generally been used to designate material cultures excavated at Gilan, an archaeological site on the southern shore of the Caspian sea, and refers to a group of Iron Age pottery and metal executions with a strong visual character. Most of the Amlash pottery vessels are believed to have been stylistically and typologically inspired by bronze wares of the same period. Terracotta vessels of this type were clearly designed as pouring vessels, but they might have been used in a particular funerary ritual and ceremonial occasion.
Measurements (circa): H 6.8cm x W 11.5cm
Provenance: Ex. specialist Near Eastern pottery collection, London, 1990s.
