A Bronze Age bronze spearhead with a long triangular blade and short tang, in good condition with patination and encrustations, measuring about 18.2 cm long and 2.9 cm wide, provenance Lorestan and ex London Collection.
Description from the seller
A fine Bronze Age bronze spearhead, featuring a long, triangular blade with square shoulders. The spearhead has a short tang for affixing the head to a wooden spear. The object is in good condition, with patination and encrustations consistent with the object’s age, focussed particularly on one side of the blade. Chipping to the shoulders and the edges of the blade.
Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, renowned in antiquity for its sophisticated metal working techniques. In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the Luristan bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
Measurements (approx.): L 18.2cm, W 2.9cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
