An antique theodolite / precision surveying instrument by Negretti & Zambra, London, fitted with an optical eyepiece, an integrated compass, a spirit level, a graduated horizontal circle and brass adjustment screws. The instrument bears No. 283 as well as the mention Oran Oil Company – St Aimé, Algeria, which gives it added industrial and colonial historical interest. Preserved with its original wooden case. A fine antique instrument intended for geodesy, surveying, leveling and topographic measurements. Patina, signs of use and oxidation consistent with its age.
Probable dating: around 1900–1930.
