Benin Bronzefigur, a bronze reproduction from the Edo culture in Nigeria, 170 mm high and 60 mm wide, weighing 598 g, with provenance in a private collection.
Description from the seller
Small figural bronze from the Art Circle of the Kingdom of Benin, Nigeria. Depicted is a standing male dignitary with an elaborate headdress, neck rings, and a garment draped around the hips. In both hands the figure holds elongated attributes; on one side there is a ring-shaped, spun element.
The compact, frontal-facing design is characterized by the comparatively large head, the big eyes, strongly modeled facial features, and broadly worked feet. The surface has a dark, almost black patina with brown-bronze colored rubs on the raised areas. The undersides of the feet as well as the close-up views show the irregular craftsmanship of the metal surface.
H 170 mm × W 60 mm; weight 598 g.
Provenance: Volkhard Ilmer Collection, Krefeld (d. 2025); previously van Derks Collection, Amsterdam/ Munich. Included is a handwritten provenance sheet by Dr. jur. Eberhard van Derks. Since March 2025 in the possession of Petra Dado / Kojocollection.
The handwritten provenance sheet by Dr. jur. Eberhard van Derks is part of the auction and will be handed over to the buyer together with the figurine. It describes the object as a miniature figure from the Kingdom of Benin and provides further details about its prior collecting history.
