Description from the seller
Saint Dimitri (Demetrius) of Rostov, also called Saint Dimitri, metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl (1651–1709). The identification is quite clear from the upper inscription and from his iconographic features.
Artifact
What the icon represents
- Saint Dimitri of Rostov, bishop and metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl.
- He is shown full-length, with a mitre and episcopal vestments, holding the staff and blessing with his right hand.
- On the table, to his right, there is a book, alluding to his extraordinary activity as a writer and compiler of saints’ lives.
- The central upper inscription reads roughly: «Святитель Димитрий митрополит Рост...», that is, Saint Dimitri, metropolitan of Rostov...
Saint Dimitri was also one of the great religious writers of Russia in the 17th–18th centuries. His most famous work was the Great Menologion of Readings, a vast compilation of saints’ lives.
Artifact
The two upper scenes
Upper left shows Christ, seated among the clouds, blessing and holding the Gospel.
Upper right likely depicts a scene from the saint’s life, related to his monastic and spiritual activity. The iconography of Dimitri of Rostov is exceptionally rich, and there are numerous variants with scenes from his life and with books or sacred images. Orthodox Encyclopedia
