Description from the seller
Vintage brass perpetual calendar 1960-2014 - Indian, with red and black engraved floral decor - Desktop model - can also be hung.
India (export product), ca. 1960
Decorative vintage brass desk calendar with a rotating mechanism, suitable for 55 years (1960 to 2014). The front is richly hand-engraved with floral motifs, vines and leaves, with red-lacquered (or red-filled) backgrounds and an engraved border with a dash pattern. The wavy, scalloped shape with pointed tips gives the object a pronounced Eastern character.
In the middle a disc rotates with the text "55 yrs Calendar 1960 to 2014" and the indication "Place year over month, use red month for leap years". The month-, year-, weekday- and date-segments are black-engraved. The year on the little disc is chosen with the top fan/feather segment, after which the month and the days are set to the correct position. A small red-lacquered marking indicates leap years. On the back there is a brass support leg allowing the calendar to stand upright on a desk or shelf.
This type of brass calendars was widely made in India (e.g., Moradabad and surroundings) and sold as a souvenir or gift. Due to the artisanal engraving and the mechanical character it is a nice collectible for enthusiasts of brass, Indian handicrafts and vintage office supplies.
Used condition with visible signs of wear. There is a light patina on the brass, the red color is somewhat worn or peeled in places.
Dimensions:
approx. 16.7 cm H
approx. 13.8 cm W
approx. 2 mm D
Will be well packed and insured shipped.
