Description from the seller
Signed copy by Hans Silvester on the front endpaper, unique and unavailable as a signed copy on the internet. 168 pages and about 150 photographs, almost all in color, text in French by Christian Meunier. Green cloth binding and illustrated dust jacket. In excellent condition.
La Provence is known worldwide as the land of sun and warmth. Hans Silvester shows it beautifully in all seasons, including winter, and this book is devoted to the landscapes of lavender, a beautiful aromatic plant which, when it blooms in summer, colors the landscapes.
Hans Silvester was born in 1938 in Lörrach in the Black Forest in Germany, near Switzerland, and he graduated from the Freiburg School of Photography in 1955. He settled in Provence in the early 1960s while traveling the world, photographing peoples in their diversity and publishing numerous high-quality photographic books. He joined the Rapho agency in 1965. From the 1980s onward, Hans Silvester directed his work toward environmental activism, denouncing the ravages of deforestation in the Amazon, and publishing a long report on a river in Provence under the title “The River Murdered.” Hans Silvester remains an active photographer and in recent years has produced numerous books on the peoples of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia.
Hans Silvester received the International Planète Albert Kahn Prize in December 2022 for the entirety of his career and for his testimony of a period from 1960 to the present day. “Thanks to his openness to the world, the acuity of his photographic eye and his sense of beauty, he gives us iconic images representing people from everyday life, witnesses of a culture, a place, a moment… The photographer’s eye freezes a fleeting moment to recall what makes up our history. In this sense, he is at once an artist, a sociologist, a historian, a defender of cultures and of nature through an approach grounded in trust and observation.” (retourdevoyage.com)
