"COLLECTORS-ITEM"
VERY, VERY RARE UNIQUE HAND-PAINTED LARGE APOTHECARY INTEC "GAPER" 1970
From the "Holland Museum Collection"
Truly a wonderful piece, and despite its age still in near-new condition and much more beautiful than in the photos.
Condition; excellent
no. 21 from the series of 41
Weight 2.211 Kg.
Gapers are genuine folk-art items and were exclusive to the Netherlands.
These Gapers were never sold on the market and were owned only by the chemist.
They received them from the Intec company from Veenendaal/Holland when a certain turnover was reached.
Only two unique models were produced with a very limited edition per year between 1960 and 1980. 41 in total.
All moulds were destroyed in 1980 and have thus never been made again. Very rare.
Height; approx. 19 cm
Width; approx. 11.5 cm
Depth; approx. 11.5 cm
Weight; approx. 2.211 Kg
Material; Ground natural stone
A gaper served as the signboard for pharmacists to attract customers, but also as a mark of quality for the shop.
Initially this sign was placed on the canopy, but from the 17th century increasingly attached to the facade; especially in Amsterdam this was very common.
The mouth of the gaper is not open to yawn, but to take a medicine.
The grimace of many gapers can be explained by the medicine tasting bad, or so the prevailing belief goes.
Shipped by us very well packed but we cannot be held liable for damage during transport.
We wish you good luck bidding on this very rare item.
