Description from the seller
Offered is an extremely rare and historically valuable original pair of early Goebel M.I. Hummel dolls: Hansel and Gretel. This is the large version, an impressive 42 centimeters, produced at the beginning of the 1950s.
What makes this set unique is the presence of the extremely rare original paper sticker and all the fragile accessories, which have been lost on most dolls over the decades.
Manufacturer: W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik (Rödental, Germany). Period: Approx. 1950–1952. Markings on the neck: Incised hand-signed “M.I. Hummel,” the early copyright mark and the iconic TMK-2 “Full Bee” (the bee in the V) and the rare round paper export sticker “Made in Germany” still under the foot.
Accessories (100% original):
Hansel: Original thick felt school bag with wooden clasps and the authentic pocket watch hanging from his trouser pocket.
Gretel: Original felt/textile flower in her hand and the red umbrella.
Material: Heads of early postwar rubber composition, bodies and limbs of stuffed textile.
Condition: In very complete, original condition. The clothing and accessories have been beautifully preserved.
As inherent to these very first, experimental rubber Goebel heads from 1950, the rubber shows after 76 years the well-known characteristic aging cracks (craquelé) in the face and neck, which gives the dolls their authentic historical character (see detail photos).
