Bronze gilded appliqué with a zoomorphic decoration from the Viking era, dating to the 9th–11th century, circular in form with three radially arranged perforated lugs and partial gilding remaining.
Description from the seller
Gilded bronze applique with zoomorphic decoration – Viking Age, 9th–11th centuries AD.
An interesting applique made of a copper/brass alloy, with a circular body and three perforated lugs arranged radially, probably intended for fastening or articulation within a belt, harness or accoutrement system.
The obverse preserves substantial traces of gilding, upon which a stylized zoomorphic decoration develops, possibly representing a bird or fantastical creature, executed in relief and incision. The composition and the fastening system recall the tradition of European early medieval metalworking.
It shows a dark patina, small areas of oxidation and surface wear, still retaining a notable portion of the original gilding.
Proposed chronology: 9th–11th centuries AD
Material: bronze / gilded copper alloy
Dimensions: 38 × 43 × 2 mm
Condition: archaeological conservation, with wear and partial loss of gilding.
