Description from the seller
Exceptionally signed copy by Eikoh Hosoe (1933 – 2024) with a silver marker on a blue background on one of the first pages, from the Aperture edition in 2009. Texts in English by Shuzo Takiguchi, Donald Keene and Eikoh Hosoe. 110 pages, 48 black-and-white photographs full-page either as plates or on double pages. Publisher's binding with a black and white graphic motif and dust jacket with illustrated cover. Included with the book is an invitation card from Galerie 4 in Paris extracted from the work Ordeal by Roses (format 15 x 22 cm) and depicting the book's fetish actor Tatsumi Hijikata.
Eikō Hosoe is a legendary, iconic photographer who has just passed away at 91, and about whom these qualifications are quite pertinent (L’œil de la Photographie, October 2, 2024).
Kamaitachi is the result of a close collaboration between the dancer Tatsumi Hijikata and the photographer over many years between 1964 and 1968. During this period, Hosoe seeks to photograph the landscape of his childhood memories of being evacuated from Tokyo at the end of World War II. But it is out of the question to photograph the landscape as such, because this is about photographing the memory of that landscape, and that is why the photographer and the dancer will reinvest the legend of the demon Kamaitachi that haunts the rice fields and chases the peasants with a sickle, in order to render the landscape expressive and to give life back to these childhood memories.
Book from my personal collection, in excellent condition (like new), kept with the greatest care. Very effectively protected shipping and international tracking guaranteed. In case of multiple purchases, possibility of grouped shipping with reimbursement of excess postage paid via PayPal.
