An antique family photograph album dating from 1850–1900, bound in burgundy velvet with metal fittings, measuring 30 cm by 22 cm and weighing 725 g.
Description from the seller
FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM – 19th CENTURY
Rare and interesting old family photograph album, probably dating from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1890.
Presentation album with a burgundy velvet binding, enhanced with metal fittings, clasp, and a system allowing the album to be kept in presentation position on a table.
The interior consists of several cardboard leaves with oval and rectangular spaces, preserving several old family portraits, depicting notably men, women, and children.
Presence of photographs on albumen-type paper, characteristic of 19th-century photography.
An object particularly interesting for its dual character as photographic, familial, and decorative, bearing witness to bourgeois practices of portrait presentation at the end of the 19th century.
Used condition consistent with its age: wear and rubbing of the velvet binding, signs of time on the boards and photographs, some photographs showing a loss of contrast. The clasp and metal elements show an antique patina.
Period: circa 1870–1890.
