Description from the seller
Magnificent patinated bronze sculpture representing a jazz musician in full improvisation on the tenor saxophone. This piece, with expressive and powerful treatment, captures with remarkable intensity the emotion and trance inherent to the great jazz performers.
The bust emerges from a rough, tormented base—the bronze left in its almost natural state in the lower part—as if the musician rises from the very material, carried by the music. The bald, wrinkled face, half-closed eyes turned toward the sky, and the mouth clenched on the mouthpiece convey with striking truth the musician’s total surrender to his playing. The saxophone is rendered with great attention to detail: keys, mechanisms, bell, and swan neck are perfectly legible and realistic. The musician’s wrinkled shirt, treated with expressive tool strokes, reinforces the impression of movement and intensity.
The warm brun-doro patina enhances the reliefs and depth of the modeling. The sculpture is signed Thomas on the reverse. It rests on a square black marble base.
Material: Patinated brown-gold bronze
Base: Black square marble
Style: Expressive figurative / Jazz / Contemporary art
Theme: Jazz musician, saxophonist, bust
