Clypeaster sp., a Sea Urchin with its Matching Original Matrix, dating to the Cenozoic era, in Natural condition, originating from Madagascar; total weight 3975 g; dimensions 18.3 cm high, 18 cm wide and 11.5 cm deep; authenticity Original/official.
Description from the seller
Extra Large Clypeaster Fossil Sea Urchin with Detachable Original Matrix – Miocene
An impressive and exceptionally large fossil sea urchin of the genus Clypeaster, dating from the Miocene epoch and preserved together with its original sedimentary matrix. This remarkable specimen stands out for its substantial size, considerable weight, and particularly fascinating presentation.
The fossil displays the characteristic broad, domed shape of Clypeaster, with a beautifully defined five-petaled ambulacral pattern extending across its upper surface. Its warm golden ochre, amber, and earthy brown tones enhance the natural details of the ancient echinoid, while its gently rounded contours create an elegant sculptural appearance.
What makes this specimen especially interesting is that the fossil can be completely separated from its original matrix, allowing both elements to be examined individually. The sedimentary rock preserves the corresponding natural impression of the sea urchin, including traces of its distinctive five-petaled structure, providing a fascinating view of how the fossil was originally embedded in the surrounding sediment.
The contrast between the relatively smooth, well-preserved echinoid and the rough, irregular matrix highlights the extraordinary process of fossilization. Small natural cavities, sedimentary textures, and mineralized formations remain visible throughout the rock.
With a weight of 1,305 g for the sea urchin alone, this is a particularly substantial example of the genus, combining impressive dimensions with an unusual and educational presentation.
The possibility of displaying the fossil either within its original matrix or separately makes it especially attractive for collectors of prehistoric marine life and natural history specimens.
Clypeaster Fossil Dimensions: 15.3 × 13.7 × 5.8 cm Fossil Weight: 1,305 g, excluding matrix
An outstanding and highly decorative fossil, distinguished by its impressive size, remarkable three-dimensional preservation, and detachable original matrix. A fascinating addition to an advanced fossil collection or refined cabinet of curiosities.
