Rhum J.M Millésime 2002 (Hors d'Âge / Brut de Fût), one of the most renowned and appreciated vintage rhums from Martinique.
Full name: Rhum J.M Millésime 2002 – Les Héritiers Crassous de Médeuil
Type: Rhum Agricole AOC Martinique (distilled directly from pure fresh sugar cane juice)
Aging: Around 10 years in charred American oak casks (bourbon barrels)
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): ~46.3% vol.
Packaging: Dark walnut wood display box with a metal plaque and leather label detail ("Étiq. Cuir").
History of the Distillery
Founded in 1845 by Jean-Marie Martin (hence the initials "J.M"), the distillery is located at Habitation Bellevue in Macouba, in the northern part of Martinique, right at the foot of Mount Pelée.
Unique microclimate: Its position at the base of the volcano provides exceptionally fertile volcanic soil, abundant rainfall, and an ideal microclimate for growing top-tier sugar cane.
Pure spring water: It is one of the very few distilleries that uses naturally filtered volcanic spring water straight from Mount Pelée to dilute and proof the spirit.
Ownership: In 1914, the estate was purchased by Gustave Crassous de Médeuil. The heirs of the Crassous de Médeuil family have preserved this artisanal tradition for over a century.
Tasting Notes
Crafted using traditional methods and tropical aging:
Appearance: Deep golden amber with mahogany highlights.
Nose: Intense and complex. Reveals aromas of dried fruit (dates, raisins), warm spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), pine, vanilla, leather, toffee, and toasted oak.
Palate: Structured, dry, and bold. Features a strong sugar cane character interwoven with notes of stewed fruit, cocoa, white pepper, oak wood, coffee, and fine cabinetmaking woods.
Finish: Long, lingering, and slightly tannic/bitter, with a returning wave of sweet spices, orange peel, and roasted notes.
