Description from the seller

This is an oval medallion reliquary, a Catholic sacred-art object typical of the 19th century.

The central element of the medallion shows a fragment of relic (most likely ex indumentis, a piece of cloth) arranged in a cross.

Heraldic analysis of the coat of arms

The official coat of arms of the ecclesiastical authority that sealed this reliquary comprises several elements.

The shield (the heraldry): The shield is quartered (divided into four quadrants): In quarters 1 and 4 (top left, bottom right) one can distinguish three small stars. In quarters 2 and 3 (top right, bottom left) there are horizontal straight bands or fasces.

The external ornaments (clerical status):

The shield is topped by an ecclesiastical hat (the hat of a prelate).
On each side of the shield, the cords and tassels are clearly visible (called fiocchetti in heraldry). On the left, there are at least six tassels arranged in rows (1, 2, 3).
In the Catholic Church, a hat accompanied by six tassels on each side (twelve in total) historically corresponds to the rank of Bishop or a Prelate of equivalent rank (such as certain mitred abbots).

The photographs are an integral part of the object description and complete its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any engagement.

The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.

Happy bidding

According to canon law (Can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns the reliquary solely as a sacred art object. The reliques it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
