Description from the seller
Ancient Masonic Square and Compasses, circa 1900
Beautiful and interesting antique Masonic square and compasses, made of wood and iron, with the assembly held together by three copper rivets.
The handle features a particularly interesting Masonic decoration with the compass and the square, accompanied by the letter G, placed at the center of the two symbols.
On one face of the blade there is an engraving representing the skull placed at the center of the square and compass, a strong symbol of Freemasonry, especially present at the third degree, a traditional motif of Masonic symbolism.
The square: It symbolizes matter, the earth, rectitude, and the moral rule that allows us to rectify our earthly actions.
The compass: It represents the spirit, the sky, measure, and the infinite or cosmic ideal.
The skull: It embodies the memento mori (« remember that you will die »). It recalls the vanities of material life, the vanity of earthly honors, and the necessity to detach from the illusions of the world.
The compass also features rich symbolic decoration of several Masonic symbols, notably the Eye in the Triangle, the Square and Compasses, as well as the Blazing Star, accompanied by vegetal motifs representing an acacia branch, plus the three symbols of the First and Second Wardens—the two essential officers who, alongside the Worshipful Master, lead the works and form the “three lights” of the lodge.
The ensemble presents an even, antique patina, with signs of wear and wear consistent with its age and past use. These marks contribute to the authentic and historical character of this piece.
A particularly interesting object for collectors of Freemasonry, ancient ritual equipment, and Masonic symbolism.
Estimated period: around 1900.
An antique, richly symbolic piece, bringing together several fundamental elements of Masonic iconography.
