Original 1913 pochoir fashion plate by Marie-Madeleine Franc-Nohain, dating to the 1910s, executed with hand-stencil colouring on paper, in a Realism style.
Description from the seller
This children's fashion plate shows a little girl in a hooded white ratine coat trimmed with yellow plaid, beside a boy in a sailor suit who holds a small dog in his arms. The scene is framed by a decorative border of stylised autumn foliage, which gives the composition a storybook quality and sets it apart from more conventional costume plates. The gentle narrative, the clear outlines and the fresh, harmonious palette show how fashion illustration of the period combined documentation of dress with charm and imagination. Children's clothing such as the practical yet elegant ratine coat and the ever-popular sailor suit is presented here with the same refinement as adult haute couture. The plate comes from the Journal des Dames et des Modes, the exclusive Parisian fashion journal published from 1912 to 1914. Its plates, issued under the series title "Costumes Parisiens", were coloured by hand using the pochoir technique: watercolour and gouache were applied through a series of finely cut stencils, producing bright, even colour with a handmade freshness. The journal is counted among the most accomplished fashion publications of the early twentieth century and an important precursor of the Art Deco style.
Marie-Madeleine Franc-Nohain (1878–1942) was a French illustrator and painter, the wife of the poet and writer Franc-Nohain. She is best known for her illustrations of children's books, including collections of traditional French songs and nursery rhymes. Her style is distinguished by flat, luminous colour, simplified forms and a tender, humorous view of childhood. Her contributions to Parisian fashion periodicals carry the same delicate sensibility, making her plates particularly sought after by collectors of French illustration.
