Description from the seller

Federico Munari – Exceptional Italian Mid-Century Sofa
A superb and highly distinctive sofa by Federico Munari (1907–1998), one of the lesser-known yet particularly fascinating figures of post-war Italian furniture design.

Munari developed his distinctive design language principally during the 1950s, combining an artistic sensibility with a remarkable understanding of proportion, comfort and sculptural form. He is especially renowned for his sinuous, enveloping sofas and armchairs, whose generous curves give his furniture an almost architectural presence.

His designs were produced in Italy by important manufacturers of the period, including I.S.A. of Bergamo, and his curved seating became particularly successful during the 1950s. Today, Munari's furniture is increasingly appreciated by collectors for its rarity, sculptural quality and unmistakable Italian mid-century character.

This exceptional sofa is a wonderful expression of Munari's aesthetic. Its sweeping, organic silhouette creates an extraordinary presence, while the generously proportioned curved back gives the piece an unusually elegant and enveloping appearance.

The sofa is upholstered in beautiful black and warm beige velvet, complemented by the original decorative passementerie and long beige fringe running elegantly along the base. The upholstery is in exceptionally well-preserved condition, retaining the character and sophistication of the original piece.

Most importantly, nothing needs to be done to the sofa. The structure is solid, the springs are in perfect condition and fully functional, and the piece is ready to be placed directly into an interior or collection. Its state of preservation is truly remarkable — almost as though it had just emerged from a time machine.

The combination of its sculptural form, sumptuous velvet, original decorative details and exceptional condition makes this a particularly striking example of Italian post-war design, equally at home in a refined contemporary interior, a period setting or an important private collection.
