Pair of antique wall appliques in gilded bronze with two candle holders, dating to 1850–1900, in antique style, Italian origin, featuring oval mirrors and carved wood elements, all in good condition with signs of age.
Description from the seller
PAIR OF ANTIQUE WALL SCONCES WITH BRONZE GILT MIRROR FRAMED IN FINELY CHISELED AND IMPEZZO DEDICATED TO FLORAL BOUQUETS.
France, taste of Louis XVI, 19th century
Important pair of wall sconces with mirrors, in gilded bronze finely chased with refined neoclassical setting.
Each sconce features an oval mirror with a molded frame and an inner profile decorated by a sequence of spherical elements.
The summit is topped by an elaborate bow and fluttering ribbons motif, from which two decorative elements descend on the sides of the frame.
The lateral structure is enriched by volutes, foliate motifs and phytomorphic ornamentation, while the lower part is characterized by a rich composition of leaves, flowers and carved vegetal motifs.
Each mirror is flanked by two bronze-like candle arms with wooden ends of a distinctive curved shape, featuring grooved elements and finely carved terminals. The fittings and uprights are adorned with vegetal motifs, with acanthus leaves and palmette motifs, executed with notable attention to detail.
The gilding shows a patina and superficial wear consistent with age, with tone variations and abrasions documenting its conservational history. The mirrors show widespread oxidation and foxing, elements of particular interest for assessing their antiquity and the conservation of the ensemble.
The pair stands out for the richness of the carving, the complexity of the ornamental composition, and the perfect in-pendant design, characteristic of sconces intended for representative rooms.
Materials: gilded bronze and carved and gilded wood; mirror.
Era: 19th century, in the French XVII style
Condition: good for age; wear and losses of the gilding, oxidation of the mirrors and wear to the wooden elements. Present restorations and/or professional conservation interventions.
