Antique advertising thermometer in enameled tin (enamel-coated metal) from the French brand Le Mandarin, a popular aperitif in the 1930s.
The upper part features the red inscription "Le Mandarin" and the slogan "Préféré aux amers et bitters".
Curved enameled sheet metal in white and red with the thermometer bulb at the bottom.
It reports the scale in Celsius degrees (from -30°C to +50°C) with historical indications such as "Sénégal" and "Rivières" along the column.
Material: iron, enamelled; designs and letters/numbers slightly raised.
History: Le Mandarin was a famous French brand of mandarin-based aperitif, with gentian and quinine, launched on the market in the mid-1910s and marketed until the early 2000s.
The liqueur was created in France between 1910 and 1920. The name and the distinctive bright orange color were chosen as a tribute to Imperial China, recalling the traditional dress of court dignitaries (the mandarins, indeed).
