Germaine OURY (1889-1978) Germaine OURY-DESRUELLES
Germaine Oury-Desruelles (born Sophie Germaine Oury), French sculptor born October 6, 1889 in Valenciennes and died February 13, 1978 in Ville-d'Avray, was the wife of sculptor Félix-Alexandre Desruelles.
Artistic career: She exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d'Hiver, winning a gold medal in 1934 for her statue of Rabbi Abraham Bloch. Her works, including terracotta and bronze sculptures such as Après le bain (1931) or Jeune femme accroupie, are held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes and the Musée des Années Trente. She also rebuilt the monument to the executed Lille residents after its destruction by the Germans.
War period: Of Jewish origin, she took refuge in La Flèche in Sarthe from 1939 to 1943. Arrested on October 9, 1942 by the Feldgendarmerie for her Judaism, she was released the same day without trial. She left Sarthe in April 1943 to return to Paris, thus avoiding deportation.
Legacy: Buried in Valenciennes' Saint-Roch Cemetery alongside her husband, she left behind a body of work marked by Orientalism and the Art Deco style, with pieces still sold at public auctions.
