A rare museum-quality colorless glass tumbler by Walzenbecher Tumber, dating to circa 1780–1800 from Bohemia, with a hand-engraved heraldic shield and putto motif in a Baroque acanthus frame, height 9.5 cm, diameter 7 cm, and in good used condition.
Description from the seller
For sale is a rare, museum-worthy antique colorless-glass tumbler (Walzenbecher), manufactured approximately between 1780 and 1800. The piece captivates with its elaborate, handmade wheel engraving (deep-cut and satin finish), evidence of high craftsmanship.
Central motif: A heraldic shield in a Baroque acanthus frame, crowned by a spangenhelm. In the shield as well as as an ornament atop the helm is the allegorical depiction of a boy/putto with a bow and a branch, set against the background of a finely engraved harp (symbol for harmony and virtue). Very likely an elevated civic coat of arms (patrician crest).
• Decor: The upper lip rim is adorned with a period-typical, finely scrolling floral garland.
• Manufacture: Mouth-blown glass with deeply incised hand engraving. No signature or monogram (typical for this era).
• Region: Probably Bohemia, Silesia, or southern Germany.
