Narrow wall console in carved wood, antique style, estimated period 1850–1900.
Description from the seller
Narrow carved wood console - Neorenaissance style, c. 1880–1910.
Elegant wall console, probably French-made, executed in carved wood and in a reddish-brown tone.
Features a cut-out top over a small drawer, central stem in the form of a cartouche richly carved with foliage, flowers, scrolls and large volutes. Sits on a molded base, likewise cut, incorporating a second drawer. Both have circular pulls in yellow metal. Flat back, suitable for placement against the wall.
The architectural composition and the ornamental repertoire frame the piece within the Historicist Neorenaissance taste, with influence from the Henri II style, quite widespread in French furniture of the late 19th century. There are parallels with walnut French consoles of this era, characterized by pronounced moldings, drawers and carved supports.
