Portuguese octagonal solid wood column from the second half of the 19th century, in antique style, made of Madeira with dimensions 71 × 38 × 38 cm.
Description from the seller
Portuguese solid wood octagonal column, turned - 19th century.
An antique column in mahogany-toned wood, intended for displaying sculpture, a vase, flower pot, or other decorative object.
It features an octagonal top, surrounded by successive stepped moldings, resting on a sturdy turned shaft in the shape of a double baluster. The base, also octagonal, wide and moulded, provides good stability. The symmetric, architectural composition fits within Portuguese historicist furniture with Neoclassical influence, produced during the second half of the 19th century.
Parallels can be found in nineteenth-century Portuguese walnut columns and in other European pieces of the period with octagonal tops, turned shafts, and stepped bases.
- Origin: Portugal - attribution
- Period: second half of the 19th century, approximately 1850–1900
- Style: Historicist; Neoclassical inspiration
- Materials: solid wood, probably mahogany
- Dimensions: 71 × 38 × 38 cm
Condition: good overall, considering its age. Longitudinal shrinkage cracks are visible in the turned shaft and small openings at the joints, without structural compromise.
