Legno Fossile (Petrified Wood); Petrified Wood Sphere specimen from Madagascar dating to the Triassic, showing intricate growth rings and earthy tones with silica minerals (quartz and chalcedony), weighing 1270 g and measuring 97 mm in diameter, in natural, excellent surface condition as a collector's sphere.
Description from the seller
A polished spherical fragment from prehistoric times — This unique specimen presents a finely crafted sphere carved from a block of fossil wood from Madagascar, an authentic testament to the Triassic period, dating back over 200 million years. Through the process of petrification, the organic matter was gradually replaced by minerals, mainly quartz and chalcedony, preserving with extraordinary fidelity the intricate grain and the original texture of the wood. This geological phenomenon transforms the vegetal material into a hard, durable rock, while retaining traces of its ancient biological form. The sphere displays a rich color palette dominated by an intense reddish-brown, alternating with bands and inclusions that vary from cream to black. There are semi-translucent sections where one can appreciate the different nuances and the microcrystalline structures formed during mineralization. The lighter areas reveal silica and oxide infiltrations, creating a fascinating visual contrast and highlighting the anatomical details of the wood, such as growth rings and medullary rays, now converted into minerals. Upon careful examination of the glossy surface, one perceives the incredible transformation from organic to inorganic. Some portions of the sphere retain a morphology that almost resembles living wood, but with the hardness and luster of stone. This dichotomy between organic origin and mineral composition makes every fossil wood sphere a object of great interest not only for mineral and fossil collectors but also for natural history and design enthusiasts. This specimen is not merely a decorative artifact, but a true time journey, a tangible fragment of the ancient Earth biosphere. Its presence in a collection or as an element of interior decor can evoke wonder and reflection on the deep geological history of our planet. It represents a convergence point between the art of nature and human skilled craftsmanship, capable of enhancing its intrinsic qualities.
