Description from the seller
Rare Castelli ceramic tureen, handcrafted and hand-painted.
This Castelli maiolica tureen is an elegant example of the Abruzzo ceramic tradition of the twentieth century, inspired by historic patterns developed in the renowned Castelli workshops. The bulbous shape, with volute handles, recalls the antique tureens of the local tradition.
The entire surface is hand-decorated with a rich polychrome composition of countryside flowers, leaves, and sinuous tendrils that intertwine harmoniously on a white ground, an iconographic motif much loved in Castelli’s production.
Created and painted entirely by hand, this tureen represents not only a refined decorative object but also a testimony to the long tradition of Castelli majolica, renowned internationally for the quality of the decoration and the craftsmanship of its artisans.
Castelli ceramics represent an ancient art that originated in the sixteenth century. This production, located in the province of Teramo, is based on a production process handed down from generation to generation and has become a strong symbol of identity for the local community. The surrounding area of this town, which lies at the foot of Monte Camicia, is characterized by the presence of clay soils, used for centuries as a raw material for ceramic production. Castelli ceramics are, in particular, maioliche, i.e., ceramics with a special glaze that gives them their sheen. A work of particular note is the Church of San Donato, located not far from the town center, whose main feature is a roof covered with 16th-century maiolica tiles, which earned it the nickname “Sistine Chapel of maiolica” coined by writer Carlo Levi. Castelli ceramics are famous not only in Italy but also abroad, being present in important museums such as the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the British Museum in London.
Very rare.
Excellent overall condition.
