Description from the seller
Rare Soup Cup (Midwife’s Cup) with Lid and Matching Saucer – Imperial / Charles X Style
Refined and elegant complete soup set (cup, lid and presentation saucer) in fine white porcelain, dating from the first half of the 19th century (Empire / Charles X era). The service is entirely hand-decorated with a rich combination of white enamel and geometric-floral motifs in bright gold haughtily inlaid with agate stone.
The neoclassical design features elegant fuse motifs (central medallions), stars, palmettes, and dotted garlands typical of the taste of high French craftsmanship of the period. The cup is equipped with two imposing ear-shaped handles fully gilded, and the lid is crowned by an elegant acorn knop.
The object bears no marks on the bottom, a characteristic entirely typical and common for over 70% of elite productions from Parisian artisan workshops of the 19th century (Vieux Paris), which worked on commission for nobility and the upper middle class.
Porcelain Condition: Excellent. The paste is snow-white, the glaze is shiny, and there are no chipping, restorations, or accidental cracks detected. The acorn knop on the lid has been glued (old restoration) and shows a minimal loss of gold on the tip. The fine gold brilliance remains extraordinarily bright with almost no wear from rubbing.
On the lid there is a native firing glaze trace. This is a micro superficial crack that occurred in the kiln during the first high-temperature firing; the master craftsman subsequently applied gold gilding over the line itself without interruptions, fixing it in the next firing. This detail does not constitute wear but a fascinating hallmark that attests to its entirely manual, period workmanship.
Dimensions: total height of the cup 16 cm and diameter 15 cm
saucer diameter 21.5 cm
