Bactrian bronze finger-ring with a flat round bezel, circa 1st Millennium BC, in good condition, external diameter 2.1 cm and bezel 1.5 cm, UK size N 1/2, provenance from private collection.
Description from the seller
A bronze Bactrian finger-ring with a flat round bezel. The hoop is circular and consists of a wide, flat band of bronze with rounded shoulders leading to the bezel. The bezel might have been adorned with an engraving but it has become imperceptible due to wear and patination. Earthy encrustations and patination on the surface consistent with the object’s age.
Bactria or Bactriana was an ancient country situated between the Hindu Kush and Amu Darya mountains. Its relevance centred around 600 BCE and 600 CE, as it served as a significant meeting place for Western and Eastern trade routes as well as being a central location for religious and artistic ideas. This meant large scale migration and resettlement of communities which resulted in a large circulation of new cultures and languages and an accumulation of vast wealth. Jewellery is such a wealth gained; this ring poses as a suitable example.
Measurements (approx.): External diameter 2.1cm, bezel 1.5cm
Closest UK ring size: N 1/2
Provenance: Ex Japanese collection, deceased gentleman, acquired 1970s-2000s.
