Bactrian bronze finger ring with an oval bezel and round hoop, the bezel incised with a grid and a central horizontal line, circa 1st millennium BC, in good condition with earthy encrustations and patination (internal diameter 1.8 cm, UK ring size N).
Description from the seller
A Bactrian bronze finger ring with an oval-shaped bezel and a round hoop. The hoop is comprised of a flat bronze band, slightly irregular in width. The oval bezel is decorated with incised lines in a grid formation, with one line striking through the middle horizontally and extending beyond the borders of the grid. The bezel is slightly irregularly shaped. Earthy encrustations and patination to the surface.
Bactria or Bactriana was an ancient country situated between the Hindu Kush and Amu Darya mountains. Its relevance centred around 600 BCE and 600 CE, as it served as a significant meeting place for Western and Eastern trade routes as well as being a central location for religious and artistic ideas. This meant large scale migration and resettlement of communities which resulted in a large circulation of new cultures and languages and an accumulation of vast wealth. Jewellery is such a wealth gained; this ring poses as a suitable example.
Measurements: (circa) W 2.2cm x H 1cm
Internal diameter: 1.8cm
Closest UK ring size: N
Provenance: Ex Japanese collection, deceased gentleman, acquired 1970s-2000s.
