AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A fine bronze Bactrian ring with a round hoop and round, oval bezel. The hoop of the ring is formed of one wide band of bronze that leads seamlessly, without noticeable shoulders, into a round bezel only slightly wider than the band. This bezel is decorated with moulded decoration, featuring a circular impression in the centre with a raised ring encircling it, and granulated spheres arranging in horizontal lines along the top and bottom of the bezel and leading outwards from the middle of the circular loops. Granulation is worn and flattened. Patination and encrustation to the surface.

Bactria or Bactriana was an ancient country situated between the Hindu Kush and Amu Darya mountains. Its relevance centred around 600 BCE and 600 CE, as it served as a significant meeting place for Western and Eastern trade routes as well as being a central location for religious and artistic ideas. This meant large scale migration and resettlement of communities which resulted in a large circulation of new cultures and languages and an accumulation of vast wealth. Jewellery is such a wealth gained; this ring poses as a suitable example.

Measurements (circa): External diameter 2.1cm, W 1.1cm
Closest UK ring size: S 1/2

Provenance: Private London Collection, ex Parthenon Gallery, 1990-2017.
