A rare illuminated opening bi‑folio from a circa 1835 Qur'an of Kashmiri origin, written in Arabic (original language), with two pages (frontispiece) measuring 28 x 35 cm and in good condition.
Description from the seller
A rare and sought after illuminated opening bi-folium, from a circa 1835 Qur'an and most likely of Kashmiri origin. It contains Chapter 1, Surah al-Fatiha (The Opening) and the opening of Chapter 2, Surah al-Baqarah (The Cow) v:1-5. The quality of the illumination is superb: lavish gold arabesques, dense sax-style floral scroll work in lapis blue, and jewel like polychrome borders framing the text.
The script is written in black naskh, set between ruled blue and gold lines, and is surrounded by Dimond panels of Persian inter-linear commentary, with rubies in red. Gold and pigment have faded t he lower outer corners. is defined by simple verse roundels (aya) in gold with diacritical marking in red providing devotional guidance to the reader.
This is a fabulous bi-folium worthy of any fine collection.
Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing.
Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
New German customs regulations mean that we are now having to pay customs before the item leaves the UK. Regrettably we have to pass these costs on through a surcharge on postage to Germany. As we don't know the final auctions costs we have estimated the approximate value. If the custom costs more than we have anticipated, we will absorb the additional customs duty.
